About the Moon
The Moon orbits Earth roughly every 27.3 days (sidereal) but the visible phase cycle (new moon to new moon) takes about 29.5 days (synodic), because Earth's own motion around the Sun shifts the geometry slightly each month. Its distance varies between about 356,500 km (perigee) and 406,700 km (apogee), which is why some full moons appear noticeably larger ("supermoons") than others.
